A veteran coach with over 20 years of experience at the Division I level, Tag Montague enters his second season as the volunteer assistant coach at The Citadel. In his role, Montague will work with the catchers and assist with hitting, while also serving as the team’s first base coach.
Montague came to The Citadel after spending the 2021 season as an assistant coach at Ferrum College. Before joining the Panthers staff, Montague served as an instructor for the East Coast Baseball Academy in Charleston.
Montague spent six years as an assistant coach at George Mason, serving as the Patriots’ recruiting coordinator. The Patriots captured the 2014 Atlantic 10 championship and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship game in 2018.
He went to Mason after spending two seasons at Richmond, working with the hitters, infielders and baserunners.
In his second season, he helped the Spiders reach the A10 championship game, while leading the league in home runs and slugging percentage.
Prior to his time with the Spiders, Montague helped Old Dominion advance to the CAA championship game in 2011. It was his second stint with the Monarchs, also serving as an assistant from 1999-2001
Montague also has experience coaching at Marist (2005-07), George Washington (2002-04), Virginia Wesleyan (2001-02), Richmond (1998-99) and Randolph-Macon (1997-98).
Throughout his career, Montague has coached 50 players that were drafted by the MLB, three All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans and two conference Players of the Year.
Montague played his final season at VCU, after spending the previous three seasons at Pfeiffer College. In his one season at VCU, Montague played all nine positions in a game against Radford, including earning the save in the 3-0 victory.
He graduated from VCU in 1998 with a degree in physical education.
Montague and his wife, Sheila, reside in the Charleston area.
