Smith Sets Kills Record in Loss to ETSU

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Outside hitter Moriah Smith set a single-season program record with 445 kills as the Bulldogs fell to ETSU in three sets 25-17, 25-19 and 25-18 on Friday night.

Smith entered the match tied with Rachel Sanders (2007) with 432 kills this season. The junior picked up her first kill in the first set, setting the new program record for the Bulldogs. Smith is also up to 981 career kills, just 19 short of reaching 1,000.

Smith led the team with 13 kills against ETSU, adding nine digs. Fellow outside hitter Carla Bruce added 12 digs, while right side hitter Megan Sowell posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Libero Samantha Espy led the team with 15 digs, increasing her career total to 1,408. She stands just 43 digs away from breaking the program career digs record set by Rachel Sanders (2005-08).
Defensive specialist Gracie Barnes added 12 digs and setter Logan Smith posted a double-double of her own with 33 assists and 10 digs.

The Bulldogs (8-23, 1-14 SoCon) matched ETSU (20-7, 12-3 SoCon) with 62 kills each, but the Bucs finished with a .351 hitting percentage and held the Bulldogs to .143. The Citadel posted 39 kills for the match, but had 21 attack errors to ETSU's five.

The Bulldogs return to the court on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Western Carolina. The team will honor its four seniors – Samantha Espy, Megan Sowell, Maureen Wilkinson and Dominique Williams – who will play their final matches on the McAlister Field House court.
