Columbia, S.C. The Citadel Senior
Sonny Meade slammed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pace the Thomasville HiToms to their third consecutive Coastal Plain League championship and a 7-4 Petit Cup victory over the Florence Red Wolves.
Meade's late-inning, championship game heroics were matched by Citadel teammate
Richard Jones who knocked in fellow Bulldog
Chris McGuiness with the go-ahead run on a one-out, fifth inning single.
Ironically, the HiToms third straight championship was set up in the Petit Cup semi-finals by Citadel, senior pitcher
Wes Wrenn. The hometown HiTom turned in a masterful, complete game performance against Peninsula striking out five while walking none and limiting the Pilots to just five hits and two runs.
The Citadel foursome's historic Petit Cup performance was equally matched by their regular season prowess. Meade a C.P.L. All-Star - paced the HiToms with a .322 batting average, 12 doubles, four home runs, 27 R.B.I. and a .392 .OBP. James Island native
Chris McGuiness C.P.L. All-Star - turned in a great summer as well leading the HiToms in doubles (14) and .OBP (.406). Hitting .305 for the summer, McGuiness also flashed his power belting seven home runs and 39 runs batted in. The Citadel offensive trilogy was completed midway through the season when Sumter native
Richard Jones rejoined the HiToms and promptly launched a power surge crushing eight home runs, six doubles and a .300 batting average in just 27 games.
Wren returned for his second HiToms season in late July also posting a 3.33 E.R.A. with 24 strikeouts in 24 innings and an impressive .236 opponents batting average.
