Cross Country to Host 30th Annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational
Charleston, S.C. - The Bulldog Cross Country teams will host the 30th Annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational on Saturday, September 25 at James Island County Park in Charleston, S.C. The invitational, which features collegiate and high school athletes, will begin with the first race at 9:00 a.m.
The College Men will start the invitational in the first race and will be followed by the College Women slated for a 9:45 a.m. start. The 23 collegiate teams participating include Southern Conference opponents College of Charleston and Furman. Also competing are Armstrong Atlantic, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Charleston Southern, Chattahoochee Tech, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coker, Converse, Georgia College & State, Lenoir-Rhyne, Methodist, Newberry, North Greenville, Salem, SCAD, Savannah State, SC State and Warren Wilson.
The high school athletes will take to the course next with the varsity boys starting at 10:15 a.m. and the varsity girls following at 10:45 a.m. The high school junior varsity participants will wrap up the Invitational with the boys at 11:15 a.m. and the girls at 11:45 a.m. The high schools represented at this year's race include Academic Magnet, Ashley Hall, Augusta Prep, Battery Creek, Beaufort, Berkeley, Bishop England, Bluffton, Cane Bay, Carolina Academy, Charleston Math & Science, Charlotte Country Day, Colleton County, Daniel, First Baptist, Fort Dorchester, Hanahan, Hilton Head Prep, James Island, Lassiter, Lexington, Military Magnet, Morris-Hamblen East (Tenn.), Northwood Academy, Pinewood Prep, Porter Gaud, Riverbend Christian, Riverwood (Ga.), Spartanburg Christian, St. John's Christian, Summerville, Wade Hampton and Wando.
The race will also include participation from a few club teams, St. Andrew's Park, Mount Pleasant Track Club, Summerville Storm and James Island Track Club.
The Last Race
The last time The Citadel cross country teams were in action, they traveled to Rock Hill, S.C. and participated in the Winthrop-Asics Invitational hosted by Winthrop University on Saturday, Sept. 18. The men finished the race in seventh place overall with an average time of 27:04.35, while the women earned a ninth place finish with an average time of 21:03.92. The site also played host to the South Carolina Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. In that race the Bulldog men posted a fourth place finish and the women in sixth place. Sophomore Kyle Keene led The Citadel men's team as he posted a time of 26:10.63 for an 18th place finish. Freshman Danielle McKee finished first among the Bulldog women's squad in 43rd place with a time of 19:59.22.
