Citadel Spikers Open SoCon Play at UNC Greensboro on Saturday

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team begins Southern Conference play this weekend when the team heads to UNC Greensboro for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday.

A victory over the in the conference opener would mark the first in program history and the third in the all-time series between the two programs. The resurgence of Rachael Farrell, who has 52 kills (.238 attack percentage) and 66 digs in her last four matches, has escalated the senior right side to first in the team in kills (111) and second in digs (142).

"The team is excited to start SoCon matches," said head coach Amir Khaledi. "We have had a very long and tough series of non-conference matches and are looking forward to starting conference play. We have been playing the combination of Rachael (Farrell), Lauren (Hurt) and Jessica (Maxwell) and their numbers show it. With Mikaela Tracy anchoring our offense, she will need to have a great setting day for us to be successful."

After taking the first two sets of its Southern Conference opener at Elon, UNCG was forced to a deciding frame but emerged victorious inside Alumni Gym Thursday night.

Junior Karrian Chambers was the story of the evening, racking up 15 kills and a career-high 22 digs for her second double-double of the season. Redshirt junior Olivia Humphries and sophomore Kelsey Sidney joined Chambers in double-digit kills with 17 and 10 respectively. Defensively, freshman Katherine Santiago racked up 22 digs while junior Kellie Orewiler added 15.

UNCG hit .219 in the match with 60 kills while limiting Elon to a .194 performance, including .056 in the fifth set. The Spartans also outdug the Phoenix by a large margin (78-59). Elon got the best of the blocking at 8.0 to 3.0.
