Dogs Head to Charleston Southern for East Bay Deli Invitational

Charleston, S.C. – This weekend The Citadel volleyball team will appear in its final in-season tournament when it heads to intracity rival Charleston Southern to compete in the East Bay Deli Invitational. The Bulldogs open the two-day event against Stetson on Friday evening and follow with matches against Wofford and host Charleston Southern on Saturday.

The Bulldogs are looking to inject life into their offense, currently led by the tandem of Ise d'Angelo (91 kills, 2.53 kills/set) and Jessica Maxwell (62 kills, 1.72 kills/set). Defensively, Lauren Hurt's 10 solo blocks and 23 assisted blocks combined with 112 digs by Emily Dalton have given the Dogs a solid building block defensively.

The Bulldogs are a combined 7-41 all-time against this weekend's opponents, including five victories over Wofford in the 15-year history of the program. The Citadel also has a pair of wins against Charleston Southern in 18 head-to-head meetings.

Stetson (3-10 Overall)

  Friday, Sept. 14, 5 p.m.

For the second time this season and third time in two years, Stetson battled Florida Atlantic to a fifth set only to come away empty handed.  Tuesday evening FAU won by scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 15-3, handing the Hatters their third fifth set loss of the year.

The Hatters staved off three match points in the fourth set to force a game five, but FAU rolled to the 12 point win in the decisive frame.

Ellen Hawks had a career-high 15 kills, Monique Russell collected 24 digs, and Kelli Carneal recorded eight kills, 19 assists, 15 digs, and six blocks.

Stetson continued to have success in opening sets, winning 25-20 on Tuesday.  The Hatters committed just two attack errors in the opening frame to improve to 8-5 in first sets this year.

Wofford (5-3 Overall)

  Saturday, Sept. 15, 12:30 p.m.

Led by Amanda Liguori's match-high seven kills and .429 hitting percentage, the Wofford volleyball team knocked off Gardner-Webb 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17) on Sept. 5 in the Paul Porter Arena.
 
Wofford held a .312 team hitting percentage compared to a .204 team hitting percentage for Gardner-Webb.  The Terriers had 55 kills on 128 swings with 15, errors, while the Runnin' Bulldogs had 50 kills on 142 swings and 21 errors.
 
Liguori added 16 digs to go along with her 17 kills as she earned a tie for the team lead with four double-doubles on the season. Wendy Burnett had four total blocks, two solo and two block assists, while Bekah Dorsey handed out 30 assists and ten digs.  She is tied with Liguori with four double-doubles.  Reagan Styles collected 14 digs.  She now has 1,317 career digs, just two digs shy of four place all-time in the Wofford record books.

Charleston Southern (4-7 Overall)

Charleston Southern was defeated twice on the final day of the Marriott Greyhound Classic, falling in four sets to both tournament host Loyola and Rider last Saturday to close out the weekend in Reitz Arena on the campus of Loyola University Maryland.

Senior middle blocker Wynter Davis was named to the All-Tournament team for the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern falls to 4-7 in the 2012 season after going 1-2 on the weekend as CSU defeated Morgan State in straight sets on Friday afternoon to open the tournament.

Meredith Parrott led the way with 10 kills and Kayla Klinger, Sydney Tracy and Wynter Davis had nine kills apiece against tournament host Loyola University Maryland on Saturday morning, but led by Faye Lukas' match-high 22 kills, the Greyhounds downed the Buccaneers in four sets, 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14.

Ashley Higgenbothem and Tracy had 15 digs apiece and Klinger and Kirsten Struksnes also were in double-digits for Charleston Southern as the Buccaneers fell to Loyola Maryland.

Sydney Tracy recorded a match-high 14 kills and Kayla Klinger added 13 of her own as the Buccaneers took the first set from Rider, but led by the trio of Stephanie Nagy, Kayla Wong and Jaclyn Webber, the Broncs rallied to take the final three sets and the match win, 18-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19.

Tracy and Klinger finished up the game with double-doubles as Klinger finished with 14 digs and Tracy added 12 as the Buccaneers fell to 4-7 on the 2012 season. Ashley Higgenbothem added a team-high 20 digs for the match, while Meredith Parrott had five blocks at the net for CSU.
