Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker to College of Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – The Bulldogs and Cougars added another exciting chapter to the crosstown rivalry on Wednesday night as The Citadel soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in a game that would give the winner the final spot in the Southern Conference tournament.

The game's only goal came just 1:37 into the match when the Cougars took advantage of a free kick. Kate Twohig took the attempt from near the corner flag and Haley Hutchens headed the ball onto the foot of Maryam Buazza who drove the shot past Bulldog goalkeeper Samantha Millspaugh.

Millspaugh, who made her first career start, had a good outing as the freshman played all 90 minutes between the posts and racked up six saves.

True to its history, this 12th edition of the intracity showdown was extremely physical and drew 22 evenly-split fouls and three red cards after a physical altercation broke out on the field in the 62nd minute that resulted in the ejections of two Bulldogs players and one from College of Charleston.

The Bulldogs would continue to attack despite playing with just nine players on the field as they managed seven shots in the final 27 minutes, including three on goal by Jannel Johnson.

Perhaps The Citadel's best scoring opportunity came in the 57th minute when Johnson took a pass from Vanessa Aponte and drilled a 20-yard bending shot that beat the Cougar keeper but deflected off the near post and caromed off the goalie and out of bounds.

On the ensuing corner kick, Nicole Levermann rose up and headed a shot towards the net, but the Cougar defense stymied the attack.

The loss eliminates the Bulldogs' chances at making the Southern Conference tournament as they close out the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 5-12-1 and a SoCon mark of 3-7-1.
