Bulldogs Set for “Win and In” Match Against Crosstown Foe College of Charleston

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel soccer team's playoff hopes are on the line on Wednesday night when it faces off against the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. at Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant. The winner of the match earns the final spot in the 2012 Southern Conference tournament which is slated to begin on Oct. 28.

The Citadel, who currently holds an overall record of 3-6-1 in the conference, sits just one game behind the Cougars (4-5-1) entering the match.

"As a team we will compete and play hard for each other tomorrow," said head coach Bob Winch. "It is important that everyone brings their talent and if we do these things the result will take care of itself."

A season ago, the Bulldogs topped the College of Charleston in exciting fashion when they capitalized with two unanswered second half goals to edge out the Cougars 3-2 on WLI Field. The win was The Citadel's first in program history against its intracity rival, snapping a ten game losing skid.

For the Record…

Mariana Garcia has been dominant for the Bulldogs this season, breaking school career records in goals (31), points (67) and shots on goal (100). The junior is currently tied for ninth in the NCAA with 14 goals on the season and tied for 29th in total points with 28.

The Bogota, Colombia, native has scored at least one goal in 11 of the Bulldogs' 17 contests and has recorded multiple goals on three different occasions.

Vanessa Aponte has recorded three assists in the past four games and seven overall for a new Bulldog season record. Earlier this season the junior captain moved into first place in program history in the same category, recording 15 during her three seasons at The Citadel.

Aponte is currently tied for 50th in the country in assists, while Anastasia Mesa paces her with six.

Freshman Jannel Johnson is quickly moving up the record books for the Bulldogs as the Pemproke Pines, Fla., native has railed through five goals on the season and posted 61 total shots, good for sixth place all-time in a season.
