Bulldogs Hit the Road for a Pair of Crucial Conference Matches

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel soccer team will trek to North Carolina this weekend for a pair of crucial conference matches against Appalachian State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Western Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Bulldogs are currently tied with Georgia Southern for ninth place in the Southern Conference with a record of 2-5-1. The top eight teams move on to compete in the SoCon Tournament which begins on Oct. 28.

A season ago, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the second half with goals by Nicole Levermann and Angela Foyt. Just eight minutes into the second frame Mariana Garcia found the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal en route to The Citadel's 3-2 victory.

Vanessa Aponte scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season against the Catamounts last season on WLI Field, but a pair of scores by Western Carolina's Samantha Hodge would be enough to edge out the Bulldogs, 2-1.

Moving up the Ranks…

Garcia continues to build on her impressive 2012 campaign as she is now tied for 14th in the NCAA with 12 goals. The Bogota, Colombia, native is also 13th in the nation in goals per game (.800) and 33rd in total points with 24.

The junior currently sits atop The Citadel soccer record books in career goals scored (29),  career gamewinners (11), career points (64) and career shots on goal (95).

Vanessa Aponte, who holds the school's career and season assist records, is currently ranked 73rd in the NCAA with six. Teammate Anastasia Mesa is ranked 131st with five.

All-time Bulldogs shots leader, Aponte, sits in second place in the conference with 57 on the season. Freshman Jannel Johnson (56) and Garcia (54) are in third and fourth place, respectively.
