Davidson Tops The Citadel in Midweek Conference Clash

Charleston, S.C. – Mariana Garcia's early second half goal was not enough on Thursday as Davidson edged out The Citadel 2-1 on Washington Light Infantry Field. The loss drops the Bulldog's record to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.

Garcia's eighth goal of the season and 25th of her career came in the 50th minute when The Citadel's career assist leader, Vanessa Aponte, pushed a pass onto the foot of Garcia which she finished into the back of the net.

Garcia sits just four goals shy of breaking Kelly Pesterfield's mark set in 2003. The assist was Aponte's fourth of the season and 12th of her career.

The Wildcats struck first as a mishap on the exchange from Karina Schneider to Bulldog goalie Sarah Katchen was deflected and lobbed into the back of the net for the game's first goal.

"I didn't pass the ball strong enough to Sarah [Katchen] and it resulted in a goal," said Schneider. "We need to create more chances on offense and clear the ball better on defense."

Davidson posted their second goal late in the first half when a well-centered corner kick by Rachel Stelter found Lauren Swany in the box which she was able to head past Katchen to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute.

The Bulldogs' best chance to notch one on the board in the first frame came in the 43rd minute when Aponte drilled a laser that grazed the post and deflected out of bounds.

Both offenses had plenty of chances in the second half to change the score, but great goalkeeping on both sides stymied the attacks. Katchen collected another five saves on the day giving her 66 on the season and moving her into first place in the conference.

The Bulldogs collected two more late shots by Aponte and Jannel Johnson that hit the post but were unable to score the equalizer as the Bulldogs fell to conference foe Davidson, 2-1. The win improves the Wildcats record to 4-5-2 overall and 3-2 in the SoCon.

Garcia collected two more shots on goal in the contest, leaving her with 84 for her career. The mark is nine shy of the school record. Garcia's two points awarded from tonight's goal also leaves her just four shy of the school record. Kelly Pesterfield currently leads both categories.

The Citadel will close out the weekend on Sunday against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.
