Bulldogs Drop Close SoCon Match to UNC Greensboro
Greensboro, N.C. – Mariana Garcia drilled her seventh goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the half, but UNC Greensboro's two second half goals were enough to edge out The Citadel 2-1 at UNCG Stadium on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (3-7-1, 1-2-1) struck first in the 43rd minute as Garcia dribbled the ball past the Spartan defense and lobbed a perfect drop shot over UNCG keeper Jamie Simmons to give her team a 1-0 lead at the half.
The score was Garcia's seventh of the season and 24th of her career leaving her just four shy of the school record. The Bogota, Colombia, native also added two shots on goal, giving her 82 for her career leaving her 11 shy of the program's all time record.
The Bulldogs came out in the second frame and played solid defense but the backfield broke down in the 73rd minute when UNCG's Lauren Hein took a pass from Karin Sendel and drove it to the top right corner past Bulldog keeper Sarah Katchen.
Just four minutes later Hein would add the game winner for the Spartans when she collected a pass from Chesney White and headed it into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs were only able to gather four total shots on the day as the Spartans dominated the category, 15-4. Katchen recorded three more saves on the day to improve her season total to 61.
The Bulldogs will head home for a Thursday afternoon contest against Davidson on Oct. 4, before heading to Statesboro, Ga., to take on Georgia Southern on Sunday, Oct. 7.
