Bulldogs Play to a 1-1 Draw Against Elon
Elon, N.C. – The Citadel's defense held strong through two overtime periods after Nicole Levermann's 65th minute header found the back of the net to even the score at one goal apiece on Friday night against Elon on Rudd Field. With the 1-1 draw, the Bulldogs now hold an overall record of 3-6-1 and a Southern Conference record of 1-1-1.
Nicole Levermann's second goal of the season came off a perfectly dropped pass into the box by Anastasia Mesa who posted her team-leading fifth assist of the season and sixth of her career moving her into a tie for third place in Citadel history.
Goalkeeper Sarah Katchen recorded another stellar game as the junior posted nine saves, two in the second overtime period, while playing all 110 minutes in net. Katchen now has 58 saves on the season.
The Bulldogs edged out the Phoenix (2-6-4, 0-1-2) in shots with a 21-20 advantage. Jannel Johnson posted another seven shots, five on goal, to lead the team on the season with 39.
The first half went scoreless as the backfield on both sides of the field thwarted an array of shots. The Phoenix struck first in the 57th minute as a Jennie McGorty shot from 20 yards out found the back of the goal to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Citadel would take three shots at game winner in the first overtime period, but Elon keeper Kate Murphy would stymie the Bulldogs to force a second overtime period.
Elon's Katie Boyle and Kendall Stanley fired two shots in the second overtime, both of which were scooped up by Katchen as time expired on the contest.
"It was a battle for a full 110 minutes as we pressed forward and created a lot of chances with our defense being strong," said Ruth Leiva. "It was a quality game and a good fight."
The Bulldogs will take the field on Sunday at 2 p.m., as they face off against UNC Greensboro in hopes to nab their first win against the Spartans in program history.
