Bulldogs Topped by Dolphins in Final Preseason Game

Jacksonville, Fla. –
The Citadel soccer team fell to Jacksonville on Sunday 5-0 to finish their weekend exhibition slate at the Ashley Sports Complex. The Bulldogs will head into the regular season next Friday, Aug. 17, at Charleston Southern.

"This weekend of exhibition games has helped us figure out what we need to work on so we can continue to excel as a team," said junior captain Vanessa Aponte. "We came out hard in the second half and created chances."

The Dolphins came out strong in the first half, posting four goals on 15 shots in the first 35 minutes of play. Mariana Garcia led the Bulldogs with five shots while Jannel Johnson recorded two.

"Johnson works hard up top and if we can create open shots for her than I know she can be a dangerous player," said Aponte.

Johnson, a Pemproke Pines, Fla., native is entering her first season with the Bulldogs after earning all-county and all-state honors at American Heritage High School.

The Bulldogs will take to the road for their first five games of the season before heading home to take on Coastal Carolina on Sept. 7. Southern Conference action kicks off on Sept. 21 against Furman on Washington Light Infantry Field.

"I know we can be one of the top teams in the conference this season as long as we continue to work hard," finished Aponte.
