Davidson Tops The Citadel, 2-1, in Overtime Thriller
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team was downed in overtime, 2-1, in an exciting Sunday afternoon Southern Conference match on Alumni Field in Davidson, N.C. The loss is the Bulldogs' fourth consecutive to give them an overall record of 4-10-2 and a conference record of 2-5-1 with just three games left to play.
It took only 15 minutes for the Bulldogs to take the lead on a shot to the near post from senior captain Hannah Warne that found the back of the net. The goal is a career-first for Warne, who was playing in her 67th game in a Bulldog uniform to give The Citadel a quick 1-0 lead.
The lead would last just eight minutes as Davidson (7-7-2, 5-3) was able to march down the field and get a cross-pass in the box that Wildcat forward Stephanie Piperno headed in the net past Bulldog keeper Cassie Palmacci for her fifth goal of the season.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie, with both teams collecting seven shots apiece.
The Bulldogs came out of the gate firing in the second half, drilling eight of the first 13 shots. Sophomore leaders Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia connected for 13 of the team's 19 total shots, seven of which were on goal, but scooped up by Wildcat goalie Rachel Locke.
Defense prevailed for the final 20 minutes of play as the time ran out in regulation with the score knotted at one goal apiece.
The Citadel came out in the first overtime fighting for the game-winner, as Garcia got a good look on goal in the 95th minute that Locke would snag for her seventh save of the game.
Just three minutes later, in the final minute of the first overtime, the Wildcats would end the game on a shot from Davidson's Becca Fisher that bounced off the far post and into the goal.
"Fantastic soccer game today. I'm happy for Hannah [Warne] who scored her first collegiate goal off of a good buildup. From back to front our play was very good," said Coach Bob Winch.
The loss leaves the Bulldogs on the outside of the SoCon playoff picture, with three games remaining against Wofford on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C., Furman on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. in Greenvile, S.C., and the crosstown season finale against College of Charleston on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. on Washington Light Infantry Field.
