The Citadel Defeats Francis Marion, 3-1

Florence, S.C. - The Bulldog Soccer team extended their spring season win streak with a 3-1 victory over Francis Marion University on Saturday. The Citadel moves to 2-1 overall.

Freshman Vanessa Aponte tallied the Cadets' first goal of the match when she picked up a loose ball and fired a shot from 18-yards out, making a connection with the net in the 26th minute. Ten minutes later, freshman Ruth Leiva took a pass from classmate Mariana Garcia and stretched the Bulldogs lead to 2-0. Aponte collected her second goal of the match in the 83rd minute, giving the Bulldogs a three-goal lead.

Offensively the Cadets' outshot Francis Marion, 17-8, and while led by junior Hannah Warne, the Bulldogs' defense maintained a shutout for the majority of the match. The Patriots finally found the net in the 88th minute and tallied their lone goal off of a rebounded shot.

Defending The Citadel net, junior Laura Serafino and freshman Cassie Palmacci spit time in the goal.

The Cadets will wrap up the spring schedule in Jacksonville, Fla. facing North Florida on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., and against Jacksonville on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. For more information on The Citadel Soccer, visit the official website of Bulldog Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.
