The Citadel Falls on the Road to Winthrop, 2-1
Rock Hill, S.C. - The Citadel Soccer team fell, 2-1, to Winthrop University in an exhibition match on Wednesday at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop led with 13 shots while The Citadel followed closely with 11.
The Bulldogs opened the match in offensive strides as freshman midfielder Jillian Meyer scored 58 seconds into the match from an assist by junior Amy Loughran. Defensively, The Citadel held the Eagles scoreless in the first half, however, the Cadets struggled in the second half giving up two goals as Winthrop's Allie Vandewater scored at the 49:35 mark. Kathryn Leach sealed the Eagles' victory as she shot a header for the game-winning goal with 57 seconds left in the match.
Loughran led the Bulldogs with six shots with five on goal. Each of The Citadel goalkeepers, juniors Laura Serafino and Whitney Nave along with freshman Cassie Palmacci, each competed in the match. Serafina and Nave both recorded saves for the Bulldogs.
"This was a very good game for us after a few days together in preseason practice," said head coach Bob Winch. "I thought everyone competed to win against a very good and well-coached Winthrop team."
