Bulldogs Top Duke, Fall to No. 24 North Carolina at UNC Duals
Chapel Hill, N.C. – Odie Delaney earned wins in each of his two bouts on Sunday to move into a tie for second place in school history with 117 career wins as The Citadel wrestling team split a pair of matches at the UNC Duals. The Bulldogs downed Duke 19-17 before falling to North Carolina, 27-9.
With the Bulldogs down 17-15 heading into the final bout, heavyweight Odie Delaney earned a major decision victory over Duke's Brian Self to clinch The Citadel's seventh win of the season and eighth consecutive against the Blue Devils.
An 11-4 decision over Tar Heel heavyweight David Woody in the Bulldogs' second dual moved Delaney into a tie with Travis Piccard ('06) for second-most wins in Citadel history with 117. The redshirt senior is now just eight shy of tying Sean Markey ('06) for most in school history.
After dropping its first two matches, The Citadel's seventh-ranked Ugi Khishignyam earned a 5-1 decision over Duke's Tanner Hough to pull the Bulldogs within four, 7-3. The win was Ugi's conference-leading 35th.
Following a Jordan Dix loss, Matt Frisch and Vincent Bellaran collected wins by decision and fall, respectively, to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the match, 12-10.
A Josh Tuck win by decision, in between losses at 174- and 197-pounds, left The Citadel down 17-15 heading into the heavyweight bout. Delaney sealed the victory by a 14-3 margin to earn his 33rd win of the season and third by major decision.
It was all North Carolina in the second dual of the day as the 24th-ranked Tar Heels notched wins in each of the first four bouts, including an overtime win by No. 6 Evan Henderson over No .7 Ugi Khishignyam at 141.
After a scoreless first period, the two ranked grapplers exchanged escapes to start the next two periods and closed out the seven minute regulation at a 1-1 tie.
Henderson earned a takedown in overtime to top the Mongolia native by a 3-1 score. Henderson has now edged out the Bulldog grappler twice this season in close matches.
Frisch put The Citadel on the board in the 157-pound bout with an 8-6 decision over UNC's Chris Mears. The redshirt freshman improved his record to 26-13 on the season.
A win by Marshall Haas at 197-pounds, followed by an 11-4 win in Delaney's regular season finale, concluded the match with the Tar Heels on top, 27-9.
The Citadel (7-6, 5-2 SoCon) will take the next three weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Championships held on March 9 in Lexington, Va.
