Citadel Wrestling Prepares for Friday Night Grapple with Appalachian State
2012-13 Citadel Wrestling Statistics
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team will look to end Appalachian State's 11-match Southern Conference winning streak on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. when the Bulldogs take on the Mountaineers at Varsity Gymnasium.
In perhaps the most competitive rivalry in conference action, the Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 SoCon) and Mountaineers (6-2, 3-0 SoCon) have gone back and forth in dual meets over the past 10 years, with Appalachian State holding a slight 5-4-1 edge.
The Bulldogs have taken two of the previous three meetings at Varsity Gymnasium including a 26-7 performance in their last visit on Jan. 9, 2011.
A season ago the Mountaineers topped The Citadel in a hard fought 21-19 match at McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs needed a pin in the final bout at 133, but Kyle Casaletto was unable to pin Brett Boston despite holding on for an 8-4 decision.
At the 2012 SoCon Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., the two teams finished tied for second place with 72.5 points apiece.
The Citadel enters the match with two wrestlers ranked in InterMat Wrestling's Top 20. Ugi Khishignyam is currently ranked eighth at 141. The Mongolia native collected two dual meet wins last weekend at the Virginia Duals to improve his record to 26-3 on the season.
Heavyweight Odie Delaney, who collected his 100th win and 50th pin earlier this season, is ranked 14th heading into Friday's match. The redshirt senior went 3-0 last weekend, earning wins by forfeit, major decision (20-6) and fall (2:17) at the Virginia Duals.
