Bulldog Grappler Khishignyam Tabbed as December’s SoCon Wrestler of the Month
Spartanburg, S.C. – The awards keep on rolling in for 141-pound wrestler Ugi Khishignyam. Just one day after earning his third consecutive Southern Conference wrestler of the week award, Ugi was voted as the SoCon's wrestler of the month for his performance in December.
The Mongolia native was nearly flawless in December, going 10-1 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference action. Khishignyam's lone loss in the month came to No. 17 Evan Henderson of North Carolina, as the Tar Heel grappler edged him in a 4-3 decision at the Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 2. Ugi took third place at that event, going 4-1 on the day.
The redshirt freshman followed up the performance with a decisive victory as the Bulldogs opened SoCon action with a 32-12 win over Davidson on Dec. 6, downing Sejiro Littleton with a 21-6 technical fall in the sixth minute.
Khishignyam closed out the month by winning the 141-pound title at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 16, pinning Arizona State's Chris Johnson in his first match before recording a tech fall and a major decision to reach the semifinals.
There, he earned an 8-4 decision over No. 18 Nathan Pennesi of West Virginia to advance to the title bout, where he edged No. 4 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State, 4-3.
In addition to taking the title in his class, Khishignyam was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. He was the SoCon wrestler of the week on Dec. 12 and 19.
Ugi holds a season record of 24-3 after an outstanding second place performance at the Southern Scuffle on Jan.1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Bulldogs are back in action at the Virginia Duals in Hampton Roads, Va., on Jan. 11-12.
