Delaney, Luvsandorj Ranked Nationally on W.I.N.'s Preseason Top 10 List
Newton, Iowa – Bulldog heavyweight wrestler Odie Delaney along with 174-pound grappler Turtogtokh Luvsandorj earned rankings of 10th and ninth, respectively, on Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's 2012-13 Division I Preseason Individual Rankings.
The feat marks the first time in Citadel wrestling history that two Bulldogs are ranked in the top 10 nationally in the preseason poll. Both wrestlers won Southern Conference championships at their respective weight classes a season ago and competed at the 2012 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Luvsandorj, who is entering his senior season, posted an overall record of 31-10 last year, tallying four major decisions, one technical fall and three pins. After an opening match loss at the 2012 NCAA Championship, the Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, native earned a sudden-victory decision over No. 10 seeded Te Edwards from Old Dominion to advance to the second day of competition.
Luvsandorj began Session III with a 7-3 decision over Lance Bryson of West Virginia, but later would fall to Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision.
Redshirt senior Delaney dominated in the heavyweight division a year ago, collecting an overall record of 28-4 including three major decisions, and 14 pins. The Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., native came up just one victory shy of earning All-American status at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
After winning both of his matches on the first day of competition, Delaney took his first two falls of the season against the No. 1- and 7-ranked wrestlers to close out his remarkable season.
Both wrestlers earned spots on the All-SoCon team, while Delaney was also honored with The Citadel's Male Athlete of Year award.
