Richard Hunton Invited to National Junior Olympic Shooting Championship
Charleston, S.C. – Richard Hunton earned an invitation to shoot air rifle and smallbore at the 2014 USA Shooting National Junior Championships on April 21-27 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
One spot is given to a shooter in each age group per state, and Hunton's air rifle score and smallbore marks posted at the South Carolina Junior Olympic Match in December qualified him to compete on the national stage.
Hunton, a junior on The Citadel rifle team, carded a 573 air rifle mark and 565 smallbore score in the J1 age group (18-20) and will compete against the nation's top competition in April.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for Hunton to shoot at a high level of competition and develop his concentration and focus at new venues," said head coach William C. Smith.
The Columbia, S.C., native has been a top-four scorer in each of the Bulldogs' 12 matches this season, including a season-high 579 air rifle mark at the fifth Southeastern Air Rifle Competition on Nov. 10.
Hunton and The Citadel rifle team return home next weekend for a SEARC 7 match on Saturday before hosting the NCAA/NRA Smallbore Sectional at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Sunday.
