Jackson, Hunton Card Personal Bests in Saturday’s NCAA Rifle Match
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team carded an aggregate score of 4,511 to finish in fourth place behind three ranked teams, including No. 1-ranked and 2012 NCAA National Champion Texas Christian, No. 7 Jacksonville State and No. 16 Columbus State in Saturday's match at the Inouye Marksmanship Center.
Robert Jackson and Richard Hunton both led all Bulldog shooters in air rifle with a mark of 575. The score is Hunton's career best and ties Jackson's personal best. Jackson also carded a collegiate career-best small bore score of 564.
The Wright brothers, Franklin and Thor, fired air rifle scores of 567 and 569, respectively, en route to earning varsity letters in the event. A varsity letter is earned when a marksman cards a score in air rifle or small bore that is 560 or above.
Nathaniel Moy and Hunton paced Jackson in small bore with impressive scores of 559 and 556, respectively.
The defending national champion Horned Frogs dominated the match with an aggregate score of 4,702. Behind TCU were No. 7 Jacksonville State (4,644) and No. 16 Columbus State (4,530).
TCU's Sarah Scherer, who is also a member of the United States Olympic Rifle team, took the individual crown with an air rifle mark of 598 and a small bore score of 589. Sarah Beard, who is a member of the Pan-American team, finished right behind teammate Scherer, carding marks of 594 and 586 in air rifle and small bore.
The Bulldogs will have a week off before jumping back into Southeastern Air Rifle Conference action on Oct. 20 when they head to Milledgeville, Ga., for the second of seven conference matches.
