Atkinson Earns Conference Win in 6-1 Loss to Elon
Elon, N.C. – James Atkinson earned the lone point for The Citadel tennis team in a 6-1 loss Sunday afternoon to Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-3, 0-2 in the SoCon while the Phoenix improve to 4-3 and pick up their first Southern Conference win.
Elon took the early lead earning the doubles point with victories in all three positions.
The 26th nationally ranked duo of Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann took down David Orces and Oliver Dedding 8-2 in the No. 1 position, while Elliott Sperr and Alex Howle fell to Elon's Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman 8-3 in the No. 3 slot. Both Bulldog tandems drop to 3-3 on the season and continue to lead The Citadel in doubles.
In his second appearance for the Bulldogs this season Atkinson earned the lone point for The Citadel with a win in the No. 3 slot over Brian Kowalski, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
In the anticipated rematch in the No. 1 position, Orces was toppled by Silverman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Junior JC Pauli was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by sophomore Jordan Kaufman.
Playing in the No. 2 slot for the Dogs, Dillon Berkabile battled tough with Stefan Fortmann but fell 6-3, 7-5. Fortmann was ranked as high as 117th nationally earlier this season.
The Citadel will return to action on March 8 against Davidson at 1 p.m. The match will mark the first of a five-match home stand at the Earle Tennis Center.
