Bulldogs Swept By UNCG in First Conference Match of the Season

Greensboro, N.C. – The Citadel tennis team was swept 7-0 by UNCG Saturday night at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Bulldogs slip to 5-2, 0-1 in the SoCon while the Spartans remain undefeated at 5-0, 1-0 in the Southern Conference.

The evening started off with hard fought doubles matches. Elliott Sperr and Alex Howle fell to Cameron Smith and Gaston Murray 9-8. The Bulldog duo couldn't overcome the play of Smith and Murray as the Spartan tandem won the tiebreaker 7-3 to earn the doubles point in the No. 3 position.

In the No. 1 slot David Orces and Oliver Dedding were also defeated in a heartbreaking tiebreaker. The Spartan's James Dougherty and Randy Phillips defeated Orces and Dedding 8-7 (7-3).

In singles Peter Bleach, JC Pauli and Sperr's two match winning streaks were all halted by their UNC Greensboro foes. In the No. 3 position for the Dogs, Bleach was taken down by Murray 6-4, 6-0 while Pauli lost to Phillips in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot. Playing in the No. 6 position for the first time this season Sperr was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Smith.

Junior James Atkinson made his season debut for The Citadel but couldn't outplay Daniel Mack as the Raleigh, N.C., native was defeated 6-2, 6-3.

The Bulldogs have a short turnaround as they will be back on the courts Sunday for their second conference bout. The Citadel will take on Elon (3-3, 0-0) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
