Bulldogs Fall to Elon in First Round of SoCon Tournament
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team wrapped up their 2012 season falling to the No. 6-seed Elon 4-0 at the Southern Conference Tennis Championships at Patriots Point on Thursday night.
Due to inclement weather in the morning, the match began with singles play.
Stefan Fortmann clinched the first point for the Phoenix defeating Josh Cook in the No. 2 position, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Quickly after Jordan Kaufman in the No. 3 position defeated James Atkinson 6-2, 6-2, to give Elon the 2-0 advantage on the match. In the No. 5 slot Juan Madrid defeated Peter Bleach 6-2, 6-3 to push the Phoenix ahead, 3-0.
The matchup on court one featured a battle between two all-conference performers as Elon's Cameron Silverman defeated David Orces, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 to send the Phoenix to the quarterfinals.
Elon improves to 9-14 on the season as they are scheduled to play No. 3-seed Appalachian State at 3 p.m., at Patriots Point on Friday. The Citadel concluded the year at 5-18.
