Bulldogs Travel to Appalachian State for SoCon Showdown

Charleston, S.C. –The Citadel tennis team is set to travel to Appalachian State to take on the Mountaineers at the ASU Tennis Courts on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out

The Bulldogs snapped their 11-match losing streak by defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-2 in their trip to Hilton Head, S.C., on Monday. David Orces, Peter Bleach and Elliott Sperr earned victories in singles and prolonged their current win streaks. The duos of Orces and James Atkinson and Dillon Berkabile and Bleach helped earn the doubles point for the Dogs to assistance The Citadel improve their record to 5-13 on the season.

Bulldogs vs. Mountaineers

Appalachian State leads the all-time series between the two programs, currently owning an 18-3 advantage. In last season's meeting Orces earned the Dogs' lone point defeating Alex Markov in a 6-1 loss to the Mountaineers. The Citadel last beat Appalachian State in 2005 in a 5-2 decision.

Appalachian State

The Mountaineers are currently 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Before taking on The Citadel on Thursday, the Mountaineers will travel to Elon on Wednesday for a conference match against the Phoenix. Leading up to its matches this week, Appalachian State is currently on a two-match winning streak having defeated Georgia Southern and Davidson. The team is led by Markov, who is 7-6 in singles play and 2-1 in league play, and the tandem of Alain Humblet and Markov in the No. 2 doubles position. The duo holds an 8-1 overall record and 2-1 SoCon record.

Anticipated Matchup

In a projected matchup in the No. 1 singles spot, Orces and Markov are expected to face off against each other for the second year in a row. In the top spot for their programs, Orces is currently on an eight-match winning streak and Markov is on his own winning streak, having won his last five matches and was named SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches March 19-25 on Tuesday. The Bulldog junior is one up on his Southern Conference rival holding a 1-0 record over Markov.
