Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team will hit the road for a two-match road stretch against Southern Conference foes Wofford and Davidson this weekend. The Bulldogs will face the Terriers on Saturday at 12 p.m., followed by the Wildcats on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs enter this weekend's contests looking for their first Southern Conference win of the year. The team started the season off strong earning four wins, but dropped their last seven at home to hold a 4-8 overall record, 0-2 conference record. The Citadel is led by sophomore Elliott Sperr who has racked up a 7-5 singles record, while David Orces and James Atkinson have contributed with five wins each. In doubles play, Sperr and Alex Howle have earned a 7-5 record, and enter the weekend riding a three-match winning streak.
Bulldogs vs. Terriers
The Bulldogs have an upper hand in the all-time series with a 13-7 advantage, but will be looking for their first win against the Terriers since 2008. In last season's meeting Wofford edged The Citadel 6-1. In the No.1 position, Orces defeated Tinus Van Wyk in a three-set match to earn the lone point for the Dogs.
Wofford currently owns a 1-8 overall record while going 0-2 in conference competition. The Terriers have had three matches cancelled this season due to severe weather conditions. Their lone win this season has come against USC Lancaster back in January. In the last two matches of Southern Conference play against Samford and College of Charleston, Wofford has come up short 1-6 in both occasions. The Terriers are led by senior Van Wyk with a 3-6 overall singles record in the No. 1 slot and the duo of Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith who have earned five wins in doubles action for Wofford this season.
Bulldogs vs. Wildcats
The Citadel and Davidson will be competing in their 22nd match in tennis program history. The Wildcats hold a 17-4 all-time advantage over the Dogs. The Citadel concluded the 2011 season with a loss to Davidson 6-0. The teams were not able to compete in doubles due to inclement weather in Charleston. The Dogs will be seeking their first victory at Davidson since 2003.
The Wildcats currently possess a 4-7 overall record while going 1-1 in SoCon action. Davidson will be traveling to Greensboro, NC., to take on UNC Greensboro on Saturday before taking on The Citadel at the Convington Tennis Center. The team is led by freshman Nicky Kunz with a 7-4 overall record in singles and junior Joe Schafer with a 6-5 overall record. Competing at No. 3 doubles for the Wildcats, the tandem of Connor Evins and Chris Mark have earned a 7-0 record.
