Boxscore

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Elon to end its four-match winning streak. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference, while the Phoenix improved to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Although Peter Bleach was not able to put up a point for The Citadel, he fought hard in a three-match battle against Eric Turner in the No. 2 spot. Turner took the early lead winning the first set 6-1, but Bleach battled back to take the second 7-6. Although momentum was on his side, Bleach was not able to hold off Turner and lost in a heartbreaking third set 7-6.

James Atkinson, in the No. 3 position for the Dogs, also took his opponent to three sets after falling in the first set 6-1. The sophomore diligently rallied to take the second set 6-3 before falling 6-0 to Jordan Kaufman in the third set.

The Citadel lost the doubles point after falling in all three positions. Dillon Berkabile and Atkinson in the No. 2 spot fell to Stefan Fortmann and Kaufman 8-1, dropping the Bulldog duo to 2-1 on the season. In the No. 3 spot, Alex Howle and Elliott Sperr teamed up for the seventh time the season but lost to Christopher Geaslen and Andrew Prince 8-3. David Orces and Bleach paired up in the top spot for the Dogs, losing to Cameron Silverman and Turner 8-4.

"I thought that our team competed extremely well today," said Bulldogs Head Coach Kemper Baker. "We just did not execute well enough down the stretch. I have to give a lot of credit to Elon. They have a great team that dealt well with some difficult conditions today."

The Bulldogs continue their home stand at the Earle Tennis Center by hosting East Carolina on Tuesday at 1 p.m., James Madison on Wednesday at 1 p.m., UNC Greensboro on Thursday at 1 p.m. and UNC Charlotte on Saturday at 1 p.m.
