Bulldogs Open SoCon Action Against Elon

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team will return to the Earle Tennis Center on Sunday to take on Elon at 1 p.m., for its first bout in Southern Conference play.

Last Time Out

The Bulldogs return home after a stop in Brunswick, Ga., to face Coastal Georgia and Bethune-Cookman in a doubleheader at the start of the weekend. The Bulldogs improved their record to 4-2 after defeating the Mariners 4-3 and the Wildcats 5-2.

The Citadel has won four straight matches since falling in their first two of the season at home. Sophomore Elliott Sperr leads The Citadel with a record of 5-1 and is currently on a five-match win streak. James Atkinson also has a hot hand, winning his last four matches. Dillon Berkabile made his debut against Coastal Georgia and Bethune-Cookman and collected his first singles win of the season. In doubles the duos of David Orces and Peter Bleach and Alex Howle and Sperr lead the Bulldogs with 4-2 records and have won their last four matches.

Bulldogs vs. Phoenix

Elon leads the series 6-2 having defeated the Bulldogs last season 6-1. Berkabile captured the Dogs' only point, defeating Eric Turner in the No. 3 singles spot. In the No. 6 position, Sperr was narrowly edged in a close battle that led to a super-tiebreaker with Thomas Darling. The Phoenix swept doubles play by winning in all three positions. The Bulldogs last defeated Elon in 2010 in a 4-3 decision.

Elon

The Phoenix, the 2011 regular Southern Conference champions, currently own a 3-6 record. Their first match of SoCon play against the College of Charleston was scheduled for Saturday but was postponed because of poor weather. The Phoenix are led by freshman Stefan Fortmann with a 7-3 overall record in the No. 2 singles spot. Fortmann, a South African native, is currently on a four-match winning streak. Sophomore Cameron Silverman also leads Elon in the No. 1 position with a 6-6 overall record. In doubles play, the duo of Silverman and Eric Turner currently hold a 3-4 record in the top spot.
