Bulldogs Topple Coastal Georgia and Bethune-Cookman

Brunswick, Ga. — The Citadel tennis team collected two more wins defeating Coastal Georgia, 4-3 and Bethune-Cookman, 5-2 in a doubleheader at the Coastal Georgia Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs improve their record to 4-2.

The Citadel swept doubles action over the course of the day. David Orces and Peter Bleach in the top spot for the Bulldogs paired up for the third and fourth time this season and defeated their Coastal Georgia foe, Louis Volclair and Derrick Taylor 8-2 and Bethune-Cookman's, Juan Varon and Santiago Lobelo 9-7. The Bulldog duo is now 4-0 on the season.  

Dillon Berkabile made his season debut pairing up with James Atkinson. The Bulldog tandem won 8-5 against Malhar Mali and Connor Bond from Coastal Georgia and 8-6 against Marc Misanovic and Gilbert Kibet from Bethune-Cookman.

Rounding out the No. 3 spot in doubles, Elliott Sperr and Alex Howle teamed up and defeated the Mariners' Robin Lucas and Alejandro Aquilino, 9-8. The Bulldog duo also faced off against the Wildcat's Diego Garvito and Artem Vassiliev and narrowly held them off with a 9-8 victory. Sperr and Howle have improved their record to 4-2 and have won their last 4 matches together.

Orces in the No. 1 singles position went 1-1 on the day and was narrowly edged in his first match against Volclair. Orces took an early lead and won the first set 6-4, but wasn't able to hold off his Mariner foe losing the second set 6-2 and the tie-break 10-5. The junior bounced back from his early defeat and took down Bethune-Cookman's Misanovic in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Josh Cook went 0-1 on the day, losing in the No. 2 position against Taylor from Coastal Carolina, 7-5, 6-4.

Bleach, unable to produce points for The Citadel, went 0-2. The freshman lost in a hard fought battle against Lucas from Coastal Georgia in the No. 3 position. Bleach fell in the first set 6-1, but quickly regained his composure to win 6-1 in the second set and would  ultimately lost the tie-break 6-2. Competing in the No. 2 position against Bethune-Cookman, the freshman was defeated by Varon 6-3, 6-0.

Atkinson improved his record to 4-2 on the season by defeating both his opponents. In the No. 4 slot Atkinson defeated Bond from Coastal Georgia 6-1, 6-2 and in the No. 3 position Garvito from Bethune-Cookman 7-5, 7-5.

Howle split his day in the No. 5 spot. The freshman defeated the Mariners' Leif Shuman, 6-3, 6-2 and lost against Moritz Provath from Bethune-Cookman, 6-4, 6-4.

Berkabile, competing in his first singles match of the season, secured his first win defeating Lobelo from Bethune-Cookman, 6-3, 3-6, 10-1.

Sperr continued his winning streak and improved his record to 5-1 by defeating both his opponents on the day. The sophomore rolled past Mali from Coastal Georgia, 6-3, 6-3 and in the second match found himself down after one set, losing 4-6 against Kip Jackson from Bethune-Cookman. Sperr battled back to take the second and tie-break 6-1, to claim the point for The Citadel.

The Bulldogs quickly return to the courts as they take on Elon this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Earle Tennis Center for their first bout in Southern Conference play.
