Bulldog Tennis Falls to Presbyterian, 6-1

Clinton, S.C. - The Citadel Tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Big South Conference opponent Presbyterian on Monday afternoon in Clinton, S.C. The Bulldogs now hold a 0-3 overall record, while the Blue Hose move to 4-2 in the season.

Presbyterian took an early 1-0 lead after collecting the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At the No.2 spot, the tandem of David Orces and Josh Cook closed out the doubles competition with an 8-5 defeat over Kenneth Mooney and Nathan Crocker.

Orces, a sophomore, prevented a scoreless match final when he picked up a victory at the No. 1 singles position with a defeat over Andrew Brigham, 6-3, 6-4.

Freshmen Dillon Berkabile and James Atkinson each forced their opponents to three sets at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions, respectively. Berkabile won the first set 6-1 before falling in the final two sets to Grayson Mills, each by a score of 6-1. Falling in the first set to Rafael Berghaus, Atkinson forced the match to a third set after he won the second set, 6-3. In a close bout, Atkinson was defeated in the final set, 6-4.
 
After a few days off the Bulldogs will return to action for the final three road matches prior to the 2011 home opener. The Citadel will compete in a doubleheader in Greenville, S.C., on Friday, Feb. 25 beginning with East Carolina at 11 a.m., followed by Richmond at 3:30 p.m. For more information on Bulldog Tennis, visit the official website of The Citadel Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.
