Bulldogs Open SoCon Tournament Against Western Carolina on Friday
2013 Southern Conference Tournament Bracket
Charleston, S.C. — The Citadel basketball team opens the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m., when the Bulldogs meet Western Carolina at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.
Bulldog fans will have the opportunity to see the game on ESPN3 as former Citadel play-by-play announcer Darren Goldwater and color analyst Dean Keener provide all the action.
The Citadel (8-21, 5-13 SoCon) enters tournament play having won two of its last three conference games down the stretch with victories over Appalachian State and Furman. The 11th-seeded Bulldogs are meeting Western Carolina for the fourth time in the SoCon Tournament since 1982 and look to avenge last season's 68-56 first round loss at the hands of the Catamounts. A first round victory by the Cadets would mark the 13th in program history.
After winning three straight in mid-February, sixth-seeded Western Carolina (13-18, 9-9) won only two of its final five games of the season to finish third in the SoCon's North Division. The Catamounts closed out the season with a 56-54 overtime win over Samford on March 2. The game concluded with freshman Mike Brown hitting the game-winning shot at the buzzer.
The two teams met previously this season on Jan. 5 as Trey Sumler notched a game-high 17 points and led four players in double figures as the Catamounts grabbed a 72-55 victory over The Citadel at McAlister Field House.
The Citadel was charged offensively by the sophomore scoring duo of P.J. Horgan and Marshall Harris III who scored 10 points apiece. Horgan, who missed the first 11 games of the year with the intent to redshirt, came off the bench to hit 4-of-5 from the field and grab a game-high eight rebounds. Harris hit two shots on the game, both from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Sumler was one of three Catamount starters in double figures, hitting 6-of-15 from the field, and was joined by Tom Tankelewicz (14 points) and Brandon Boggs (10). Teammate Preston Ross also eclipsed double-digits, scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
Fans can follow all The Citadel action with play-by-play announcer Danny Reed on Fox Sports Radio 1450.
