Bulldogs Renew Upstate Rivalry with Presbyterian at ESPN Ramada Worldwide Bracketbusters

Game Notes

Charleston, S.C. — The Citadel basketball team looks to carry the momentum from a recent 80-77 overtime victory over Appalachian State into the weekend when the Bulldogs head to Presbyterian for the 11th annual ESPN Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters on Saturday evening at 7:45 p.m.

The 122-team field will feature teams from 13 conferences: 12 each from Big South, Mid-American Conference and Ohio Valley Conference; 11 from the Big Sky; 10 each from Big West, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Missouri Valley and Southland Conference; nine each from Horizon and Summit Leagues; six from the Western Athletic Association; four from the Southern Conference; three from the MEAC; and two each from the America East and West Coast Conferences.

The Bulldogs and Blue Hose renew a rivalry that dates back to the 1918-1919 season, despite having not met face-to-face in 30 years. The Citadel (7-19, 4-12 SoCon) is seeking its first victory over a Big South Conference opponent this season after previous setbacks against Radford, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb. A third win in the month of February would give the Cadets their most since the 2009-10 season when they rattled off five straight to from Feb. 4-18.

Presbyterian (7-21, 4-10 Big South), who is coming off a 64-57 loss to Charleston Southern on Tuesday, is 3-1 in the Templeton Center against non-conference teams this season. Among the three wins for the PC include Toccoa Falls (97-38), North Greenville (91-83) and Montreat (77-35).

The Bulldogs and Blue Hose last squared off on Dec. 8, 1982 and behind Shawn Brown's first career double-double (22 points and 12 rebounds) the Bulldogs defeated Presbyterian 80-72 at McAlister Field House. The victory marked the 10th straight for the Cadets in the all-time series.

Brown was joined in double figure scoring by Louie Gilbert (15 points), Felipe de las Pozas (13) and John Sterling (10). Sterling completed his second double-double of the season, and first since a 10-point, 15-rebound outing at Piedmont in the season-opener, by climbing the glass for 10 rebounds. The combination of Brown and Sterling provided a 46-31 edge in rebounds for The Citadel.

Danny Howell highlighted the Presbyterian lineup with 19 points following six field goals and 7-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. In all, five Blue Hose players topped the double-digit plateau including David Behrens (14), Steve Smith (13), Bill Coon (12) and Earl Connor (10).

While Presbyterian edged The Citadel in total field goals (28-27) the Cadets took advantage of a 25-for-33 (75.8%) performance from the free throw line to claim their third victory of the season.
