Holston’s Solid Performance Unable to Topple Terriers as Bulldogs Fall 62-55
CHARLESTON, S.C.— Citadel redshirt junior Bo Holston scored a team-high 14 points in reserve, one short of a career-high, but it was four double figure scorers that pushed Wofford to a 62-55 victory at McAlister Field House on Thursday evening. Holston energized the Bulldogs lineup by hitting 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 3-pointer, while making his impact defensively with one steal and one block. His counterpart, the Terriers Karl Cochran, took home game-high honors, scoring 18 points behind a 7-of-13 shooting performance. Cochran knocked down four 3-pointers, all in the second half, as Wofford ran its streak to 11 straight in the series.
The Citadel finished 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field, taking advantage of a 12-for-25 performance in the second half. Holston led the way with his five field goals, followed closely by Mike Groselle who scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field. Freshman guard Marshall Harris III, in his first collegiate start, capped on an impressive 3-of-6 performance with nine points, three rebounds and two assists. Teammate DeVontae Wright was also instrumental as he led the Dogs with nine rebounds. The Citadel falls to 4-16 overall and 1-8 in Southern Conference play following the loss.
Cochran proved to be an anecdote for a struggling Wofford offense as he poured in 14 points in the second half. He was joined in scoring by Kevin Giltner (15 pts.), Drew Crowell (12 pts.) and Brad Loesing (10 pts.) as the Terriers outscored the Dogs behind 23-of-52 (44.2%) shooting from the field. A chunk of the second half scoring came from beyond the arc, as Wofford managed to hit 6-of-12 from 3-point range. The Terriers also took advantage of nine free throws in the frame to improve to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in conference action.
The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half, as they put together a 15-4 run that began at the 7:12 mark of the first half, taking advantage of four points from Groselle and two by C.J. Bray to make for a 27-21 lead at the 16:52 mark.
Wofford broke their scoreless drought with a layup by Crowell and followed with a pair of 3-pointers by Cochran to knot the score at 31-31 with 14:14 left in the half.
Holston scored seven of The Citadel's next nine points as the Bulldogs assumed a 40-38 lead with just over nine minutes remaining. Cochran quickly answered with a layup for the ninth tie of the game, before a Holston dagger from 3-point range gave the Dogs a 43-40 edge.
Four points by Giltner and a 3-pointer off the hand of Loesing was the backbone of a 6-0 run by the Terriers, who jumped in front 49-43 with 5:20 remaining.
The Citadel continued to make headway behind five straight points by Cosmo Morabbi as the Wofford lead ballooned to 55-48 just over a minute later.
After trailing by nine, 57-48, The Citadel turned to its defensive prowess and the backcourt scoring threat of Harris III and Wright who combined for seven points to pull within 59-55 of the Terriers with 1:21 on the clock.
Wofford held the Cadets scoreless over the remainder of the game as they tacked on three free throws to complete the 62-55 victory in front of 1,223 in attendance.
Moore came off the bench to lead six Citadel scorers with five points, hitting a pair of field goals, including a 3-pointer. He was joined by Groselle, Holston and Wright, who added four points each, as the Bulldogs hit 8-of-21 (38.1%) in the opening frame. The Cadets also controlled the paint as Groselle and Wright posted a team-high six rebounds. The Dogs made five trips to the free throw line, hitting three in the process, led by Holston who was a perfect 2-of-2.
Wofford was led in scoring by Giltner, who came through with seven points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field. The trio of Cochran, Crowell and Smith tacked on four points each, as Wofford closed out the half by hitting 10-of-27 (37.0%) from the field, converting 1-of-11 (9.1%) from beyond the arc. Cochran hauled in a team-high four rebounds to give the Terriers a slim 12-6 advantage in points in the paint.
Scoring was at a premium in the first half as the two teams combined for 20 turnovers. The Citadel established an early 6-2 lead, keyed by a Harris III 3-pointer.
Wofford retaliated to knot the game at 6-6, on a jumper from Giltner, before quick 4-0 run by the Dogs, which included buckets by Groselle and Holston, pushed The Citadel advantage back to four.
After a jumper from Moore at the 10:58 mark gave the Cadets a four point advantage, Wofford responded with nine unanswered points, including a Giltner 3-pointer, making for the Terriers 17-12 lead.
Sparked by a Groselle jumper with 6:02 on the clock, The Citadel put together a 9-4 run to close out the half. The scoring outburst included a layup by Wright and a 3-pointer by Moore along combined with a pair of free throws by Holston as the two teams went into the intermission deadlocked at 21-21.
The Citadel returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when the Dogs host Furman at 7:05 p.m. The Bulldogs will honor Jake Burrows by hanging his No. 3 jersey in the rafters alongside Art Musselman, Les Robinson and Regan Truesdale.
