Citadel Football Set to Host SoCon Opener Against No. 16 Wofford on ESPN3
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel football team will host 16th-ranked Wofford in the Southern Conference opener on Saturday with a kickoff time set for 6:04 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium in a contest that can be seen nationwide on ESPN3.
The Bulldogs (0-1) are looking to bounce back from last weekend's 32-29 defeat at the hands of Charleston Southern, but the challenge will be no easy feat as The Citadel has dropped 14 consecutive contests against Wofford (0-1) dating back to Sept. 12, 1998. The Citadel and Wofford have met 65 times with the Bulldogs holding a 40-24-1 series advantage.
Wofford opened its season last week with a 69-3 loss at Baylor. The Citadel last topped the Terriers at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Nov. 1, 1997 by a score of 7-3.
A season ago in Spartanburg, Wofford edged The Citadel 24-21. The Bulldogs sliced a 17-point halftime deficit down to three at the outset of the fourth quarter, but the three subsequent drives failed to produce points for the Bulldogs and they dropped a close conference game to then No. 7 Wofford.
Last week, Darien Robinson busted off a 36-yard run on his second carry of the season, putting the senior B-back over the 2,000-yard plateau for his career. He enters Saturday's game with 310 rushes for 2,024 yards, placing him 11th in Citadel history.
He is 32 yards shy of passing Stanley Myers to move into the top 10 and needs just 117 yards to move as high as seventh.
Ben Dupree is also climbing The Citadel's career rushing chart and enters Saturday's game with 1,763 yards to rank 17th in school history. Dupree is on pace to reach the 2,000-yard mark for his career. If Dupree reaches the milestone, he will become the 12th player to achieve that feat.
The senior quarterback also scored his 19th career rushing touchdown in the third quarter of Saturday's game against CSU and currently sits in 11th place in school history in that category.
