Carson Smith Earns SoCon Student Athlete of the Week Honors

Spartanburg, S.C. – Two days after being named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore linebacker Carson Smith was honored by the conference office as this week's student-athlete of the week.

Smith, an electrical engineering major carrying a 3.9 grade point average, recorded seven tackles and intercepted a pass to highlight a Bulldog defensive effort that limited the eighth-ranked Mountaineers to only 153 yards and seven points over the opening 30 minutes. Smith also scooped up a blocked punt by Domonic Jones and returned it eight yards for a touchdown that gave The Citadel a 31-0 lead in the second quarter.

As well as starring on the field and in the classroom, the Simpsonville, S.C., native also excels as an active member of the Corps. Smith was a training corporal during the fall sports cadre period and was selected for the Cadre Leadership Award that will be presented at the Parent's Day review.

The Citadel is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, both for the first time since winning its second and most recent conference title in 1992. The Bulldogs venture out of FCS play this weekend with a trip to Raleigh to face NC State. The Citadel will be seeking its first win over an FBS school since defeating Arkansas (10-3) and Army (15-14) in 1992.
