The Citadel Makes Huge Climb in The Sports Network, FCS Coaches Polls
Charleston, S.C. – Two straight wins over Top 10 teams have made both national polls sit up and take notice of The Citadel.
The Bulldogs made the biggest leap of any team in the country this week, reaching No. 10 in The Sports Network (TSN) poll and No. 14 in the FCS Coaches poll. The Citadel is ranked in the Top 10 for the first time since holding the No. 1 spot in the TSN poll at the end of the 1992 regular season.
The Citadel climbed 11 spots in the TSN poll and nine positions in the coaches poll. The Bulldogs have knocked off Georgia Southern and Appalachian State the past two weeks, the first time they have defeated two Top 10 teams in the same season since 1991.
The Citadel is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time since that historic 1992 campaign when the Bulldogs won their second and most recent league title. That same year The Citadel defeated Arkansas and Army and will be seeking its first win over an FBS school since then when it travels to Raleigh this weekend to take on NC State.
Other SoCon schools appearing in the TSN and coaches polls this week are Wofford (7/6), Georgia Southern (11/10) and Appalachian State (17/18).
The Citadel played its first game as a nationally-ranked team since 2008 last week and proved it belonged in the polls by dominating Appalachian State in a 52-28 victory. The Bulldogs rolled up 618 yards of total offense, including 463 on the ground, and built a 38-7 lead at halftime.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Mountaineers and was just their second victory in the past 19 meetings. The previous week The Citadel ended a five-game skid against Georgia Southern when Thomas Warren kicked a 37-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining for a 23-21 victory.
Georgia Southern was ranked third in the country and Appalachian State was as high as seventh before losing to the Bulldogs.
Since 1990, The Citadel has played a total of 32 games as a nationally-ranked team and has a record of 18-14 in those contests. Kevin Higgins is 4-5 when coaching a Bulldog team ranked in the Top 25.
