Harland Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel senior linebacker Rod Harland was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after his contribution to the Bulldogs' come-from-behind victory over No. 15/17 Chattanooga on Saturday at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. This is the first SoCon honor for the Bulldogs this season.
Harland recorded a team-high seven tackles, including six solo and a sack for a loss of three yards, as The Citadel rallied from a 27-0 halftime deficit to score 28 unanswered points for the win. Midway through the fourth quarter, Harland contributed to the comeback when he scooped up a blocked punt and raced 40 yards for a touchdown to pull the Bulldogs to within six points (27-21).
Harland leads the conference with 9.5 tackles per game. He totals 38 tackles in four games, including 5.0 for a loss of 18 yards, an average of 1.25 tackles for loss a game which ranks eighth in the SoCon. He also has one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for seven yards. Hardland's 14 total tackles against Furman ties for the most by SoCon defenders this season.
The Bulldogs (2-2 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon) will return home for a SoCon matchup against Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
