The Citadel Football Opens 2011 Season on Saturday at Home Against Jacksonville
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel Football team will open the 2011 season at home against the Jacksonville Dolphins of the Pioneer Football League on Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Samson Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The Matchup: Saturday's game marks the first meeting between the two schools and only the second time a Bulldog team faces off against a current member of the Pioneer Football League. The Bulldogs, entering their second season running the triple option offense under the helm of Head Coach Kevin Higgins, returns 40 lettermen from the 2010 squad, including 10 offensive and eight defensive starters. Jacksonville, who finished the 2010 season atop of the PFL after a 10-1 record tied them for first place, returns 53 lettermen that include six offensive and eight defensive starters.
Bulldog Season-openers: The Citadel will look to continue the momentum on Saturday from last season's finale at Samford, where they shocked the Bulldogs on their home turf with a thrilling 13-12 victory for their first Southern Conference win of the season. The Citadel holds a 53-44-4 record in season-openers, 47-10-3 in season-openers at home, and is 4-2 in season-openers during Higgins' tenure. The only two losses in season-openers for the Bulldogs in the last six years were against FBS opponents Texas A&M and North Carolina. Last season the Bulldogs won their season-opener against Chowan, 56-14, at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
