Cass Couey Named to CFPA Punter Award Watch List

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel's Cass Couey was named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Punter Watch List on Tuesday. The CFPA releases a weekly watch list for all positions throughout the summer.

Couey (Tampa, Fla.) punted in 10 of 11 games in 2010, recording an average of 39.1 yards per punt, fifth best in the Southern Conference. The redshirt junior had a pair of stellar games to begin October last season as he booted a career-best 68-yard punt against Western Carolina on Oct. 9 which was the longest punt of any kicker in the SoCon last season.

The following week, Couey earned SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week as he averaged 44.5 yards per kick against Chattanooga, including a 51-yarder and placed a pair of punts inside the 20-yard line. He converted a fake punt in the second quarter when he ran 33 yards up the middle for a first down on a drive that would eventually lead to a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Joining Appalachian State's Sam Martin, Georgia Southern's Charlie Edwards and Western Carolina's Blake Cain, Couey is one of four SoCon punters listed on the upcoming season's watch list.

The Bulldogs will return for fall camp on Aug. 4 and the first game of the 2011 season will take place on Sept. 3 against Jacksonville at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
