Football Fall Camp Report: Day 3
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Football team began their first full week of fall camp on Monday morning at the Maybank Triplets Practice Facility at Willson Field. The Bulldogs worked out for two-and-a-half hours in helmets and shorts in sunny conditions and temperatures in the low 80's.
Coach Kevin Higgins after Day 3:
On Special Teams
"We worked with our punt returning unit today. We are trying to find out who is going to be replacing Andre Roberts. Keith Gamble is slotted number one at that position right now, Scott Harward is getting some reps as well. Christian Robertson and Greg Adams are also getting looks, so those four guys are in the mix as we evaluate them. Our punt return unit hold up fundamentals looked very good today as they are coming off a strong spring."
On Offense
"The offensive line is getting more consistent. We have some new bodies in there and they are starting to make progress on understanding their assignments and responsibilities in these new schemes. We had some good one-on-one sessions between the receivers and the defensive backs. Overall, we had a lot of dropped balls today and that was disappointing. We are going to concentrate and focus a lot more there."
On Defense
"We put in two new coverage packages today and put in a couple of line stunts as well. Our guys are doing a good job of understanding their responsibilities against the run game. Our corners are working hard on their press technique and it's a matter of the guys understanding where they need to be and doing that on a consistent basis".
The team will return to practice at Maybank Triplets Practice Facility on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Workouts in full pads start on Wednesday at 8 a.m., followed by their first two-a-day on Thursday, Aug. 12 at 8 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., Friday practice at 8 a.m. and another two-a-day on Saturday.
The Citadel will host Meet the Bulldogs on Saturday, Aug. 21, following a scrimmage at 1:15 p.m. The Bulldogs' season-opener will take place at home on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Chowan at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
