Bulldogs Fall 8-4 to College of Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston scored four runs in the third inning and pushed across runs in four straight frames on the way to an 8-4 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference action Friday evening at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. The Bulldogs see their four-game win streak snapped and fall to 17-22 overall, 7-9 in the league.

Austin Pritcher suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing seven runs – six earned – on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work, striking out two. TJ Clarkson allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts. Three Bulldogs recorded two hits apiece on the evening.

Marty Gantt led the Cougars' attack with three hits and three RBI, while Rob Harding added three hits as well. Josh Renfro picked up the win, scattering four hits over six innings with four strikeouts and one walk. The southpaw allowed two runs, one earned, improving to 6-3 on the season.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third frames to take an early 2-0 lead. With one away, Drew DeKerlegand reached on an error by Renfro, when the Charleston pitcher couldn't handle the toss from Harding. Calvin Orth ripped a double to left center, sending DeKerlegand to third, and Johnathan Stokes brought him in with a RBI groundout to short for a 1-0 lead. Justin Mackert doubled the Bulldogs' lead to 2-0 in the third with a solo home run to left, his fifth of the season.

Charleston (27-12, 15-7) used five hits and one Citadel error to score four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-2 lead that it would not relinquish. Brandon Glazer reached on an error by Orth at first and Gunner Heidt doubled down the left-field line to put both runners in scoring position. Jimmy Holton knocked a sacrifice fly to right to score Glazer, while a double down the right-field line by Gantt scored Heidt to knot the game at 2-2. Bradley Goodson singled to right to plate Gantt with the go-ahead run and Goodson advanced to second on the throw. Brandon Murray's RBI single to left brought in Goodson for a 4-2 Cougar lead.

The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the fourth for a 6-2 advantage. With one out and a Heidt at first, Holton doubled down the right-field line and Gantt brought both runners in with his second double of the evening, a shot to left on the first pitch from Pritcher. Charleston added single insurance runs in the fifth and sixth frames for an 8-2 lead. A RBI single by Heidt in the fifth plated Harding, while Harding's RBI single in the sixth scored Goodson.

The Citadel pushed across two more runs late in the game, scoring single runs in the eighth and ninth, but ended up falling by the 8-4 final. Joe Jackson led off the eighth with a triple down the right-field line and scored on a balk by Charleston reliever Nick Osterman. Hughston Armstrong also tripled, leading off the ninth, and scored on Orvin's RBI single to center to close the scorebook.

Saturday's first pitch of game two is set for 3:00 p.m. and can be heard on Sports Radio 1450 AM with Danny Reed handling the play-by-play.
