Bulldogs Use Ninth-Inning Rally to Defeat Samford 5-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nick Orvin and Mason Davis each had ninth-inning RBI base hits and Orvin's throw from center field was on the mark to tag out the final out of the game at the plate as The Citadel claimed a 5-4 win over Samford in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Trailing 4-3, The Citadel came back with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Samford reliever Lex Rutledge came on for starting pitcher Josh Martin to start the ninth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Rutledge hit Grant Richards with a pitch. C.K. Irby then replaced Rutledge on the mound and Orvin promptly doubled down the left-field line to drive in Richards to tie the score at 4-4. Davis then singled to center to drive in Orvin for the eventual game-winning run.

Clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, The Citadel gave up a one-out triple to Zeth Stone. Brad Moss then flew out to Orvin who then threw home and catcher Joe Jackson tagged Stone out to end the game in a 5-4 Citadel victory. The Citadel improves to 13-19 overall and 4-8 in league play, while Samford drops to 20-12 overall and 9-6 in the SoCon.

The Citadel took a 3-2 lead after three innings. Bailey Rush, who went 3-for-3 on the day, knocked a two-run single in the second inning and after Samford knotted the game with two runs in the bottom of the frame, Justin Mackert lined a RBI single to center in the third, scoring Davis for a 3-2 advantage.

Samford took a 4-3 lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before The Citadel's heroics in both sides of the final frame.

For The Citadel, Rush had three hits and two RBI to lead the way at the plate. Jackson went 2-for-3 for The Citadel, while Ryan Hines (3-1) pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits to earn the win. Logan Cribb started the game for The Citadel, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work.

Samford was led at the plate by Miller, who hit his 12th home run of the season, going 1-for-3 on the day. Moss, Corbin and Allison each had one hit and one RBI.

Irby (3-1) gave up one run on two hits in a third of an inning to take the loss for Samford. Martin started the game for Samford and pitched 8.0 innings, giving up three runs, only two earned, on eight hits. Martin struck out six batters, while allowing just one walk.
