DOGS HEAD TO SAMFORD IN SEARCH OF FIRST ROAD WIN
Despite defeating No. 28 Coastal Carolina Tuesday evening at Riley Park, The Citadel dropped a 5-2 decision to Charleston Southern on the road Wednesday to fall to 0-7 away from home this season. The Bulldogs will look to reverse the trend this weekend against Southern Conference foe Samford in Birmingham, Ala. Due to the Easter holiday on Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday afternoon.

LAST WEEK
Kevin Connell tossed seven scoreless innings for his first collegiate victory, leading The Citadel to a 3-0 victory over No. 28 Coastal Carolina Tuesday evening in front of 1,013 at Riley Park. Connell, improved to 1-2 on the season, scattering four hits over the career-high seven innings and walking five with four strikeouts. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Joe Jackson and Calvin Orth. Hughston Armstrong, pinch-hitting for Bo Thompson, hit a RBI groundout to second to plate Mason Davis for the third run in the sixth.

Charleston Southern rallied from a 2-0 deficit with five unanswered runs to hand The Citadel a 5-2 defeat in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark. The Bulldogs scored a pair in the top of the fourth to get things going offensively on a RBI double by Drew DeKerlegand and a RBI single by Hughston Armstrong. The Bucs knotted the game at 2-2 in the fifth, scoring both runs on a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line by Jaren Sustar and took a 4-2 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Chase Shelton and a RBI single by Brian Welch. Alex Tomasovich's two-out RBI single up the middle in the seventh added an insurance run.

SCOUTING SAMFORD
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 18-11 overall record and a 7-5 mark in SoCon play, good for fifth place in the standings. Saxon Butler leads Samford with a .391 average, 19 walks and a .496 on-base percentage. Brandon Miller adds 10 home runs and 35 RBI to the Samford offensive attack.

Samford earned a 7-3 win at Alabama A&M Tuesday afternoon at the Bulldog Baseball Complex. With the win, Samford improves to 18-11. Samford was led at the plate by Christiaan Durdaller, going 2-for-3. Saxon Butler hit his fifth home run of the season in a 1-for-3 performance. Phillip Ervin and Austin Allison also drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.

THE 700 CLUB
Head coach Fred Jordan is just two victories away from becoming the 36th active member of the 700-club of NCAA Division I baseball head coaches that have recorded 700 career victories. Jordan had 686 victories entering this, his 21st, season of Citadel baseball.

TWO SELECTED PRESEASON ALL-SOCON; BULLDOGS PICKED EIGHTH
Drew DeKerlegand was selected to the Southern Conference preseason all-conference first team and Nick Orvin was chosen to the all-conference second team, as voted on by the league's 11 head coaches. The Citadel was picked to finish eighth in both the coaches' and media preseason polls.

A FRESH LOOK
With 18 newcomers this season, The Citadel will feature a new look in several areas this season. The entire middle of the infield will be experiencing their first playing time in college as freshmen Bailey Rush and Johnathan Stokes will battle for the starting spot at short and Mason Davis has grabbed the spot at second. Two freshmen are likely to see significant time in starting pitching roles as Kevin Connell and James Reeves toe the rubber. With the loss of a handful of members of the last season's bullpen, several first-year players are expected to contribute in that area as well.
