Bulldogs’ Rally Falls Short in 7-6 Loss to Appalachian State

Boone, N.C. – The Citadel scored three runs in the top of the ninth, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate and Appalachian State held on for a 7-6 victory over the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Smith Stadium. The loss gave the host Mountaineers a Southern Conference series sweep over the Bulldogs, dropping them to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the league.

With Appalachian leading 7-3 heading to the final inning and closer Nathan Hyatt on the mound, Bo Thompson drew a leadoff walk and Grant Richards pinch-ran for the Bulldogs' designated hitter. Hughston Armstrong lined a pinch-hit single to center, moving Richards to second and Drew DeKerlegand loaded the bases with a pinch-hit single through the right side. Calvin Orth lined a 0-1 pitch from Hyatt into right for a RBI single, cutting the deficit to 7-4. Hyatt recorded two quick outs, but Joe Jackson came through with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Armstrong and DeKerlegand. TJ Clarkson entered the game to pinch-run for Orth at second and on the first pitch from Hyatt, Nick Orvin looped a single into right field. Clarkson rounded third and the throw from Appalachian right fielder Tyler Tewell beat Clarskon by three feet, with catcher Jeremy Dowdy applying the tag to end the game.

Appalachian (17-3, 6-0 SoCon) raced out to the 7-3 lead by scoring runs in the first six innings. A RBI single by Daniel Kassouf in the first and a run-scoring groundout to second by Trey Holmes in the second accounted for a 2-0 Mountaineer lead after two frames.

The Citadel (8-11, 1-5) plated three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Zach Sherrill drew a leadoff walk on four pitches and Orth doubled down the line in right, advancing Sherrill to third. Johnathan Stokes picked up the second base on balls of the frame to load the bases and Mason Davis crushed a 0-1 pitch from ASU starter Rob Marcello off the wall in left for a two-run double to knot the score at 2-2. Jackson followed up with a RBI groundout to second, scoring Stokes from third for the 3-2 advantage.

Appalachian tied the game up in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left by Will Callaway, his second of the season. The Mountaineers scored two runs in the fifth, bookended by single runs in the fourth and sixth, for the 7-3 lead and setting the stage for the dramatic ninth inning.
