Talley Hurls Complete Game but Eagles Pull Out 4-3 Win
Statesboro, Ga. – Senior ace Matt Talley threw a complete on Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium, but Georgia Southern capitalized on Bulldog errors to comeback for a 4-3 win in front 1,552 fans.
The loss for The Citadel (10-16, 5-8) is their ninth one-run defeat this season and sixth in conference play. The Eagles (16-11, 7-3) capitalized on a Bulldog error in the fourth inning to tie the game and in the fifth inning to take the lead.
The Bulldogs would strike first in an early pitching duel between Talley (Sumter, S.C.) and Georgia Southern's Chris Beck. In the fourth inning, all with two outs, Joe Jackson (Mauldin, S.C.) started it off with a single and William Ladd (Winnsboro, S.C.) then walked to put two aboard. An infield hit by Drew DeKerlegand (Pearland, Texas) would load the bases for the Bulldogs and after working the count full, Justin Mackert (Cleveland, Ohio) lined a base hit up the middle to score Jackson and Ladd for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the frame when Ben Morgan doubled and scored on an RBI single by Victor Roache. A double by Michael Burruss and an error by Ladd in left field, who bobbled the ball, allowed Roache to score to knot the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles would again take advantage of a Bulldog error and score a run as Andy Moye reached on a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Shawn Payne. On a groundball hit to second, the Bulldogs got Payne on the play but Legare Jones' (Columbia, S.C.) throw sailed high at first, allowing Moye to score. A double to left field by Tom Richardson scored Roache in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2 for GSU.
The Bulldogs would cut the lead in the eighth and chase Beck from the game when Nick Orvin reached on an error at second base. Beck (4-0) went 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned), and a walk while fanning four. Georgia Southern closer Matt Murray came on and surrendered a base hit to Brad Felder (Bowman, S.C.) to put runners on the corners. Matt Simonelli (Orlando, Fla.) then drove in Orvin on a deep sac fly to the warning track in dead center, but Murray recorded a strikeout and a groundout to strand Felder on third base and then set down the order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Talley (1-3) took the tough luck loss after throwing 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned), a walk and struck out six. Mackert went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the Bulldog offense while Roache went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs to pace the Eagles.
