Root Concludes Season in Cleveland at NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Citadel wrestler Sawyer Root wrapped up his season Thursday at the NCAA Wrestling Championships held at Quicken Loans Arena, falling in both of his matches despite showing plenty of fight in both.

Root started the championships off against No. 5 seed Shakur Rasheed of Penn State. Root started out strong in the first round and garnered two points just before time expired. Rasheed would shake off an earlier injury to claim the match by a major decision score of 13-5.

Thursday night saw Root's season come to a close on a 17-14 decision to Drexel's Stephen Loiseau. Loiseau opened up the match on a 12-0 run in the first period, but Root's relentlessness allowed him to outscore Loiseau in the remainder of the match. Root posted three takedowns and an escape in the second round to close the gap to 12-7. Â

In the third round, Root opened up with another takedown and a stalling call to cut into the lead. Louiseau was hit with another stalling call and Root earned two points for a reversal setting up a score of 15-10 in favor of Louiseau. However, Louiseau was able to gather up the strength to make a final takedown, earning two points to close out the match.
Root finishes the year with a career-best 25-16 overall record. This was Root's first trip to the NCAA Championships after placing second in the Southern Conference at 197.
