Bulldogs Finish 15th in the Hokie Open on Sunday

ROANOKE, Va. – The Citadel wrestling team finished 15th at the Virginia tech-hosted Hokie Open on Sunday, Nov. 5 in Roanoke, Va.

The Bulldogs (0-1) racked up a total of 13.5 points during the tournament that began at 10:00 a.m.

Senior Ty Buckiso got the first win of the day for the Bulldogs in the 149-pound dual with a pin in 4 minutes, 26 seconds over Army's Patt Mayolo. Buckiso then snagged another win in the second-round bout against Appalachian State's Christian Beach by a 6-0 decision before falling in the quarterfinal to Troy Heilmann from UNC.

Sophomore Rian Burris defeated AJ Rechenmacher from UNC in the 157 lb. bracket by a 10-4 decision, before dropping his match in the quarterfinal to Stanford's Paul Fox by a 9-6 decision.

Freshman Matthew McGillick won his first two bouts in the 174 lb. bracket by a 10-7 decision and a fall in 50 seconds. McGillick dropped the quarterfinal match to Duke's Matt Finesilver by an 18-0 technical fall.

The 197 lb. junior, Sawyer Root, was the last to earn points for the Bulldogs with a 6-1 decision over Army's Alex Hopkins before falling by an 8-5 decision in the quarterfinal.

Next up, the Bulldogs will compete in the Journeymen Northeast Duals on Nov. 11-12 in Troy, N.Y. which includes 14 teams, three of which finished in the top-11 at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The Bulldogs are set to take on Sacred Heart at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and North Carolina State at 3:00 p.m. Full results from the duals will be available at CitadelSports.com.
