Spann Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Leading the Southern Conference in interceptions and closing out a win at Chattanooga with a game-sealing pick in the end zone have earned The Citadel's Aron Spann III (Spartanburg, S.C.) SoCon Defensive Player of the Month honors for October.
Spann leads the SoCon and is second nationally with five interceptions this season, three in October. The junior had two interceptions in the Bulldogs' 20-14 win at Chattanooga on Oct. 21. One came with 70 seconds remaining in the Bulldogs' end zone, ending a late drive by the Mocs and jump-starting The Citadel's current SoCon winning streak.
Last week, Spann had an interception and a fumble recovery in the Bulldogs' 21-3 win over VMI. He is part of a defense that ranks among the Top 20 nationally in key categories including Total Defense (10th), Rushing Defense (19th), and Scoring Defense (14th) The Bulldogs lead the SoCon in all three categories and three points allowed in the win over VMI last week are the fewest allowed under Brent Thompson.
Spann is tied for fourth on the Bulldogs' defense with 36 tackles this season and has four QB hurries to go with his five interceptions, one shy of the national lead.
Samford quarterback Devlin Hodges was named the offensive recipient.
The Citadel hosts Western Carolina on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium for Senior Day. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
