First Pitch!

With Commencement behind us, it has become relatively quiet on campus although Maymester is already a week old.

While we bid adieu to our graduating seniors, the campus staff has collectively exhaled and is now finishing up with the spring semester.  Baseball is our only sport in season, and Coach Fred Jordan’s troops are working hard to ensure a spot in the Southern Conference Tournament that we’re again hosting later this month.

TCBF has an electric golf cart that we’re currently raffling off to one lucky ticket-buyer, and we also have a beautiful and unique print that we can create that features a battalion “saluting” you just for renewing your membership (there is a June 30 deadline).  For information, please call us at 843/953-5277.

As expected, we have another packed issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

TBCF Raffles Electric Golf Cart

The Citadel Brigadier Foundation is in possession of a $15,000 CT&T Electric Golf Cart and we’ve elected to raffle it off.  Anyone can purchase a ticket ($20 each or three for $50).  The street legal vehicle will be raffled off on May 30.  As with everything with TCBF, all proceeds go toward funding our athletic scholarships.  To purchase a ticket, please stop by our office in McAlister Field House or call us at 843/953-5277.  Credit cards are accepted.

Have Your Battalion Salute You

You may or may not have been the most popular cadet in your battalion during your years at The Citadel, but now you can be while having your entire battalion salute you.  To get your battalion behind you through a personalized print, all one has to do is join (or re-join) The Citadel Brigadier Foundation before June 30.  Have your company salute you on the quad with your name and class year by calling us at 843/953-5277.

Diamond Dogs Swept by Elon; Fall at CofC & at USC Upstate

The Citadel cut their deficit to one run in the seventh inning but could not overcome an early 6-0 hole as they fell to USC Upstate, 8-5, on Wednesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville.  Despite registering double-digit hits for the 14th time in their last 19 games, the Bulldogs saw their losing skid extend to five games, matching their longest of the season in their first trip back to Greenville's Fluor Field since the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament.  Nick Orvin went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI while Matt Simonelli went 3-for-4 and a three-run home run to lead the offense.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs allowed seven unanswered runs and fell, 7-1, to the College of Charleston in a non-conference contest at Patriots Point.  The Cougars scored five runs in the eighth in the midst of a 38-minute lightning delay to seal the win as they got strong pitching and capitalized on three Bulldog miscues.  Bryce Hines struck out nine batters in 5.0 innings and allowed four hits, two runs (one earned) and no walks.  William Ladd extended his streak of reaching base to 23 consecutive games as he tallied two hits along with Legare Jones, who went 2-for-3.

The Citadel was unable to hold a 5-3 lead with two outs in the top of the ninth on Sunday as Elon battled back to sweep the three-game series in an 8-6 victory in 12 innings.  The Bulldogs were swept at home for the first time ever by Elon, as the two teams went into extra innings for the fourth time in the past two seasons.  It marked the third time The Citadel has been swept this season in conference play and the second time at home.  The 16 league losses are tied for the most in school history, set in the 2005 season.

Despite taking an early lead on Saturday afternoon, The Citadel was unable to overcome a big fourth inning by Elon as the Phoenix captured the series with an 8-2 victory.  The Citadel was able to take advantage of only one of Elon's five errors and that came in the bottom of the second when Justin Mackert doubled.  After moving to third on a groundout by Drew DeKerlegand, Calvin Orth reached on a throwing error that allowed Mackert to score the first run of the game.

On Friday The Citadel could not overcome an early hole as they watched their five-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-6 loss to Elon.  Despite out-hitting Elon and recording double-digit hits for the 12th time in their last 15 games, a 9-1 deficit in the third inning proved to be too much to overcome.  After allowing just one home run all season, starter Matt Talley surrendered a pair of long balls in the first three innings in a game that started two hours late due to heavy rain in the Charleston area.

Former Citadel Football Standouts Return for Piccolo Spoleto’s Spotlight Concert Series

They wore The Citadel blue and white football uniforms and toiled in the trenches of historic Johnson Hagood Stadium 17 years apart, yet both were named among the Southern Conference’s best linemen during their time.  Now they return together to their Alma Mater to present the most unique concert ever held in McAlister Field House.

Dr. Tony Cicoria, Class of 1974, and Morris Robinson, Class of  1991, revisit The Citadel on Sunday, June 5 at 7 pm, as part of the 2011 Piccolo Spoleto “Spotlight Concert Series.”  Both return to give back to the college they love so as a fundraiser for The Citadel Football Association in a concert setting that is appropriately entitled, “From Athletes to Artists.”

Cicoria is an orthopedic surgeon in Norwich, NY who was struck by lightning.  Having no musical background, he developed an insatiable desire to listen to piano music, taught himself to play and is now a celebrated concert pianist.

Robinson, on the other hand, is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most fascinating and sought after basses performing today.  A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in their production of Fidelio.

Both Cicoria and Robinson will appear with the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Donald Portnoy.

Tickets are $51 (Gold), $36 (Silver) and $16 (Bronze) and may be secured by contacting the Piccolo Spoleto Ticket Hotline at 866/811-4111.  General festival information may be secured by calling 843/724-7305 and the website is www.piccolospoleto.com.

Proceeds benefit The Citadel Football Association, its athletic scholarship and efforts to enhance the football program for players and coaches.

Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame Seeks Nominations

Fans of local baseball lore can nominate and ultimately vote for their favorite players, teams and coaches as the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fames seeks recommendations for the Class of 2011.

Originally designed for professional players that played for the local professional team, the Hall of Fame five years ago was adjusted to include amateurs and teams, in addition to those who played in the major leagues.  The Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame is located inside Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

An advisory committee consisting of knowledgeable and local volunteers was created to come up with names as potential nominees.  The group selects annually a maximum of 12 candidates for consideration and voting is conducted by fans.  Ballots will be available online at www.riverdogs.com and at Riley Park.

Those already enshrined with Citadel ties include Coach Chal Port (2006), the Bulldogs’ 1990 College World Series team and Anthony Jenkins (2007), Richard Wieters (2008), Donald Morillo and Doug Pounder (2009) and Coach Fred Jordan and Lee Glaze (2010).

To nominate an individual or a team for consideration in 2011, please forward appropriate support information to The Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame, c/o Charleston RiverDogs, PO Box 20849, Charleston, SC  29413, or email it to pr1@riverdogs.com.

He Said It:

"Shoeless Joe told the family he was innocent, and usually family tells family the truth.  The story we're told is that some players were thinking about throwing the World Series, and he heard about it but didn't say anything. … Then, after a couple of games he comes into his room and finds $5,000.  He tried to give it to (White Sox owner) Charles Comiskey, but he couldn't get past the secretary. We're told that he ended up giving the money to charity."

  • Freshman catcher/designated hitter Joe Jackson, on his great-great-great-uncle Shoeless Joe Jackson.
